The Popularity of Silver Jewelry
While gold has always seemed to be timeless, silver jewelry has also been popular in the past, and it seems to be gaining more popularity in recent years. Some of this undoubtedly comes from recent popular movies where much of the jewelry worn by the characters was silver, but some of it also likely comes from a simple renewed interest. Just as styles and fashions change, other interests change as well, and jewelry appears to be one of these other interests. Because of this, silver jewelry has enjoyed a renewal of interest, especially among younger people who seem to enjoy purchasing silver jewelry that looks old or old-fashioned.
Silver Jewelry versus Gold Jewelry
Most people like either silver jewelry or gold jewelry, and it is often said that both cannot be worn at once because the two clash with one another and do not look right together. Not everyone believes this, however, and even some people that do agree with that statement are not concerned about it to the point where they will follow that recommendation. Individuals should wear what they want, and if they choose to wear both gold and silver jewelry together it should not actually be a concern of anyone else’s. Silver jewelry is popular for many reasons, but one of those reasons is that it is often much cheaper than gold jewelry. Gold is generally highly expensive, especially in the 18kt variety, where silver is generally just silver and there is no specific karat value or anything else that has to be attached to it. Since that is the case, silver (which is not seen to be as precious a metal as gold) costs much less. This is true of individuals that want to buy coins or bars of silver, and it is true of individuals that want to buy silver jewelry as well.
Not Every Silver-Looking Jewelry Piece is Silver
For individuals that might be allergic to base metals, it is very important that they are aware of the silver jewelry that they buy and that it is real silver instead of simply a base metal such as nickel that is meant to look like silver. This is the case with most of the pieces of silver costume jewelry that are seen today as well as those that have been seen in the past, and it can be very problematic for individuals that are sensitive to inexpensive metals. This is especially true with earrings, as they can cause infections and other problems if a person wears them assuming that they are silver when in fact they are nickel or another inexpensive metal.
